I. Classification and Characteristics of Cat Litter
Multiple types of cat litter products circulate in the market, each featuring distinct characteristics in composition, clumping ability, deodorizing effect, and dust control. Consumers can select based on their actual needs.
1. Absorbency
Absorbency is crucial for cat litter, primarily used to absorb urine and feces, making it a key indicator of quality. Bentonite and tofu-based litters are renowned for exceptional absorbency. Tests show bentonite and tofu litters absorb liquids extremely well, with tofu litter clumping within seconds and achieving absorption rates over 200%. Crystal litter exhibits relatively weaker absorbency, while pine litter and blended litter maintain higher average absorption rates. Litter absorbency is closely tied to its composition. Common ingredients like raw ore, bentonite, soy fiber, starch-based materials, paper, and pine wood vary in absorbency due to their differing properties.
2. Clumping Ability
Clumping ability is a key indicator of litter quality. Litter with strong clumping properties rapidly encapsulates urine and feces into solid clumps, aiding in waste concealment, odor elimination, and easy cleanup. During use, only the clumped portion needs removal and replacement with fresh litter, eliminating the need for full-tray replacement. Different types of cat litter vary in clump weight, mass, and strength. Experiments show sodium-based bentonite, primarily composed of montmorillonite, exhibits high viscosity and clumping ability. Due to its higher bulk density, bentonite litter forms heavier clumps. Tofu litter, made from plant-based materials, has slightly weaker clump strength after absorbing water and expanding, though clump mass isn't the sole measure of clumping performance. Crystal litter, containing silica, lacks clumping ability. Performance comparison tests show tofu litter has the best clumping, followed by bentonite and blended litters, with bentonite producing the heaviest clumps.
3. Dust Content
Dust content is another key indicator of litter quality. Excessive dust content not only irritates cats' respiratory tracts and eyes but also adversely affects indoor environments. Dust levels correlate with particle size and hardness: bentonite litter's smaller particles often yield higher dust rates; tofu litter, made from plant-based materials like soybean residue and starch, forms cylindrical, hard pellets during processing, resulting in lower dust levels and greater safety for cats. Experiments show the dust generation rates of cat litter products, from highest to lowest, are: bentonite litter > tofu litter > pine wood litter > mixed litter (paper-based) > crystal litter. Bentonite litter has the highest dust generation rate, producing the most dust after several uses; crystal litter has the lowest dust rate, generating almost no dust.
4. Safety and Environmental Protection
Selecting high-quality, natural, eco-friendly raw materials free of heavy metals, drug residues, and pathogenic bacteria for cat litter production is crucial for safeguarding pet health. While bentonite cat litter has decades of production and usage history, offering convenience for pet care, it cannot be recycled after use and causes environmental pollution. Plant-based tofu cat litter holds promising market prospects, being environmentally friendly and biodegradable.
As a fast-moving consumer good, cat litter faces massive market demand with continuously expanding product varieties, leading to a yearly increase in discarded litter volume. By 2025, consumers will need to consider multiple factors when selecting cat litter. Beyond catering to their cat's preferences, they must also evaluate the product's quality characteristics—including absorbency, clumping ability, dust levels, and antimicrobial properties.
